The five second opinion commandments
1. Don’t get it for free
A second opinion takes a while to do properly. And specialized
doctors never work for free. So if you’re offered a free second
opinion, there’s always a catch.
2. Don’t see a colleague of your doctor
You should get your second opinion from a total stranger to your
own doctor. This ensures an independent review, focused entirely
on your medical file.
3. Trust your gut feeling
Choosing a second opinion doctor is as important as choosing your
everyday physician. Trust only those places where your file is
guaranteed to get the attention it needs.
If you don’t trust it, walk away.
4. Don’t let your insurance company choose your doctor
Choose your second opinion doctor yourself, or get a medical board
to do it for you. Letting anyone else decide,
allows for other elements but your health to be taken into account.
5. Ask questions
Don’t hesitate to ask your second opinion doctor direct
questions regarding your condition. It’s about your health. So you don’t take chances.
