“It is understandable that people are wary of a thorough preventive medical examination if there is no immediate cause yet. Therefore, it is a very personal choice which everyone has to make on his/her own; yet, I do recommend it. A preventive examination is always reassuring and that is very important for your health. After the examination you know where you stand. When everything is alright, you are most probably reassured for a long time. If something shows up during the examination, we are also reassured; because early detection permits efficient treatment and possible recovery. Preventive medicine also permits to concentrate on specific areas, e.g. possible risks of hereditary diseases. Thus, we are able to administer very purposive preventive care and anticipate worse..”

“Whether you want to undergo preventive examinations or not is a personal choice. I would like to be accurately informed about my health as with age, risk of illness or disability increases. Therefore, check-ups have to take into account the patient’s age to really fit the clinical picture. On the other hand, they also have to be thorough enough to detect unexpected ailments. Modern medical imaging, such as MRI, is a valuable asset. This demands high technical and medical personnel standards. The highest priority however remains that all examinations have to be harmless. During my preventive examinations I sometimes found unexpected cancer tumours. The best example is that of a lung carcinoma in a patient aged 45. His family doctor had dismissed this chest pain as ‘stress’. We also found many cardiovascular risks. We could convince the patients to change their lifestyle and to resolve their problem through adequate therapy.”

The health of your teeth influences to a large extent your whole body. Bad teeth increase, amongst others, the risk of cardiac infarct, brain haemorrhage and premature birth. Thus, a thorough preventive examination should always include a visit to the dentist. There is nothing alarming about it. During a first preventive examination we check your teeth and gums thoroughly and photograph your teeth so that you can see for yourself the state they are in. On the basis of this check-up we make recommendations. Research by the German Institute for Dentists has shown that people between age 40 and 65 lose on average 15 teeth. Thanks to preventive care, many of my patients in my career of 20 years lost on average less than 1 tooth. That’s why I do it.”
