Royal Doctors’ mission stems from a very personal experience. Joris Vanvinckenroye, the founder of Royal Doctors, was born with a serious problem to his right foot. The diagnosis provided by physicians in Belgium was merciless: an amputation of the right lower leg, confinement to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

“Fortunately, my parents applied to a Parisian specialist for a second opinion. The technology with regard to medical prostheses was substantially more advanced in France than in Belgium. My leg was spared and thanks to some additional prostheses I can now walk, ride a bicycle and even run. This second opinion has given my life a fantastic push in the right direction!”

After completing his studies in nursing, with additional training in psychiatry and intensive care, Joris took a job with the emergency services. It was here that he obtained insight into the complexity of medicine. Four years later, he enrolled in the Vlerick Business School. Upon completing his studies he started working as a Business Developer at Medtronic, the market leader in medical innovation. Here, he discovered a superfluous offering of medical solutions, specialisations, treatments and equipment, on the one side, and a large, unknowing public and patients seeking advice, on the other.

Founded in 1999, Royal Doctors first experienced a difficult start but has since grown into an international organisation.
